On Interpreters' Role: A Project Report On The Victoria Jiangsu Business Placement Interpreting Program

This paper was finished on the basis of the Victoria Jiangsu Business Placement(VJBP) Program which took place in May, 2016. This program was jointly held by Jiangsu Federation of Industry and Commerce and the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the purpose of promoting trade, investment and cooperation between China and Victoria. During the VJBP Program, the author worked as the liaison interpreter and program assistant. Based on the author's interpreting practice and reflection on the program, this report analyzes three roles of the interpreter: information deliver,Sino-Australian culture linker and program helper. Combining with the interpreting activities, this paper lists interpreting samples to give specific explanation of the definition and requirements of the roles of interpreters. Meanwhile the author analyzes the barriers in the interpretation: omission and misinterpretation resulting from figure interpreting,improper distribution of short-term memory and note-taking and lacking of background knowledge. Through studying the interpreting theories and achievements from home and abroad, the author came up with three solutions: firstly, adequate preparation should be made before interpretation so as to collect large amounts of materials. Secondly, teamwork must be highly valued by interpreters. During the interpretation, the interpreter and his or her partners should fully collaborate with each other to ensure the success of the interpretation. Thirdly, tools should be skillfully utilized. The interpreter should make full use of any material available including mobile devices, speech script, Power Point and brochures to improve the efficiency. This paper explains the view on the multiple roles of the interpreter to attract attention from the society in order to attach more importance to the work of interpreters. Through providing some suggestions on interpreting activities, the author hopes to help other interpreters and herself get more improvement in further interpretation.
