Language learning requires a lot of input and reading is one of the important input forms. In recent years, due to the use of the new edition of primary school English textbooks and picture books, the teaching of text reading and picture book reading has become a hot topic among primary school English teachers. However, many of the teachers are biased in their understanding that text reading and picture book reading are just simple reading. They still use the traditional teaching way which focuses on too much teaching and inculcation. They explain the vocabulary and read the text loudly, ignoring the students' position as the subject of study and the cultivation of their comprehensive language competence.Obviously, this way of teaching runs counter to the idea of the new curriculum.TBLT is a kind of task-based language teaching method based on tasks, which aims to accomplish tasks. It takes the classroom communicative activities as the main organizational form, the students as the main body of reading task activities, and promotes language acquisition through meaning negotiation among students. It emphasizes "learn by doing, learn by using",attaches importance to students' participation in fulfilling tasks.Students acquire knowledge and experience in communicative activities. Moreover,TBLT advocates exploring and discovering in learning.Based on the theories of reading and Task-based Language Teaching, this study applies TBLT to English reading classes in the primary school in order to stimulate students' interest and improve scores in reading English. The study also attempts to explore the mode of applying TBLT to English reading classes in primary schools. The author selected a total of 107 students from two regular classes in Grade Six of an experimental primary school in A city as objects of this study.By using SPSS software to analyze the pre-test reading scores and reading interest questionnaire of the two classes,it is found that there is no significant difference between the two classes in English reading grades or reading interest. Therefore, the two classes could be taken as the study subjects. And one of the classes was randomly selected as the experimental class and the other as the control class.Subsequently, the author conducted an eight-week English reading teaching experiment based on TBLT in the experimental class and still used the traditional teaching methods on reading in the control class. After the teaching experiment, the author had made a post-test for English reading grades and English reading interest of the two classes. After statistical analysis of the pre-test and post-test data by SPSS software, the study had the following findings.1.TBLT can improve students' reading interest in primary school English reading class.2.The application of TBLT in primary school English reading classes can improve students' English scores. However,in the control class, there was no significant difference in English reading grades and reading interest according to the data of the pre-test and post-test.Meanwhile,the results of interviews have showed that the application of Task-based Approach in English reading class can stimulate students' interest in learning and change the present situation of large proportion of knowledge imparting and inadequate language practice in traditional teaching.TBLT can also change students' passive learning mode and help them to achieve their independent learning and comprehensive development. This study verifies the effectiveness of TBLT in English reading teaching in primary schools to a certain extent. This research is hoped to provide worthy reference for English Reading Teaching in Primary Schools.
