On The Translation Of The Commentaries In Da Guo Gen Ji (The Power Of Agriculture) From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This report is on the study of the translation of the commentaries in Da Guo Gen Ji(The Power of Agriculture)from the perspective of Skopos theory.Da Guo Gen Ji is the first large-scale documentary ever made in China to comprehensively and systematically introduce China's ongoing agricultural modernization.It is a significant agrieultural documentary and attracts favorable comments from the audience.So it is of great significance to present such a successful documentary to international audience.Skopos theory regards translation as a purposeful activity.It involves three rules:the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.In this report,a case study of typical examples in the translation of the commentaries in the documentary is carried out under the guidance of Skopos theory.Documentary translation is largely constrained by time and space.So various translation methods should be employed out of the consideration of brevity and conciseness.Meantime,culture is the essential factor in documentary translation.In this regard,appropriate translation methods should be employed to help cross cultural barriers.The author analyzes the translation of the commentaries in the documentary at three levels:words and expressions;sentences;and styles.At the level of words and expressions,which involves proper nouns,four-character expressions and some other words and expressions in the documentary,the author adopts reductive paraphrasing and literal translation.Linguistic and culture difference is resolved through adopting liberal translation and annotation in the translation of words with Chinese characteristics.At the level of sentences,which involves null-subject sentences,loosely structured sentences,long and complex sentences in the documentary,the author adopts addition,condensation and omission in translation.At the level of styles,which involves informal language,formal language and rhetoric including simile,metaphor and personification in the documentary,the author tries to reproduce language styles,change parts of speech and employ literal translation and liberal translation.In conclusion,Skopos theory offers theoretical guidance to the translation of the commentaries in the documentary.The author hopes that this report would provide reference for the study in this field.
