In the present era, characterized by various technologically sophisticated media, after long period of neglecting, audiovisual translation is one of the fastest growing areas in the field of translation studies. Documentary films, on the other hand, has also received a certain upraise occupying a new domain in the field of film studies.The current dissertation addresses specific aspect of audiovisual translation: documentary subtitling. It proposes skopos theory as an approach to subtitling that allows taking into consideration specific characteristics of this mode of cinema. It identifies key issues concerning those characteristics:choice of appropriate translation strategy and approaches on translating impromptu speech, terminology and extra textual information.These issues concerning documentary translation are discussed through an analysis of four documentaries:Aftermath.The world without oil,2010, Indie game. The movie,2012, Fry’s Planet Word. Identity,2011and Is the man who is tall happy,2013.
