A tern is a word or expression with a specific meaning,especially one which is used in relation to a particular subject.Since it is the conclusive and important part of a discipline,faithfulness should be guaranteed and scientific nature should be retained in translation.The author took part in the Chinese-English translation of technical specification book during the internship.The full title of this specification book is Technical Specification Book of Turbine Equipment for Yumen Royaltech Yumendong Tow,n Photothermal Heat-conducting Oil Tank Type 50 MW Demonstration Project(translated by the author).It includes technical data,inspection of equipment and bidding.It is an informative text in which the accurate transmission of information is the first rule.The author found terms in the field of mechanical engineering,including some terms of the name of a device and the parameters under different working conditions.To translate these terms is one of the difficulties in translation?since some of them cannot be found directly in dictionaries or on the Internet,while others may be found more than one English equivalents.The author has searched for many theses on translation theory and practice to be dedicated to the summary of translation methods of various kinds of terms in this technical specification book.The author found the professionalism and preciseness of terms in this source text,therefore,in order to find the targeted translation methods,the author studied the communicative translation theory and chose semantic componential analysis and paraphrase among other methods put forward by Newmark.And split method is widely used in this translation practice.This is because split method can be applied for the translation of long terms,semantic componential analysis is suitable for those which are hard to understand or may bring misunderstandings,and paraphrase can be used to deal with the translation of some phrases that are hard to understand flexibly,for instance,to reach parataxis through abbreviation and free translation.The terms in this technical specification book were all translated accurately with the help of these methods.In addition,the author translated with channels including Youdao Dictionary,bing.com,Collins Dictionary and limguee.com.The discussion on the tern translation of specification book on equipment is not sufficient enough at present,thus the author hopes to bring some enlightenments to future teaching and practice.
