A Study On Primary School English Teachers' Classroom Teaching Behaviors Based On Demonstration Lessons

Teachers' teaching behaviors refer to a series of concrete,observable and recordable behaviors that occur when teachers teach in the classroom according to certain teaching objectives.In this study,based on the demonstrationlessons,English teachers' classroom teaching behaviors are observed to reveal the present situation of how the New Curriculum Reform is implemented in primary school English teaching,and to find out the problems.In this survey,the author selected 6lessons from the 8th National Primary School English Demonstration Classes as samples.The samples are recorded and transcribed,and observed in eight aspects in accordance with the requirements of the New Curriculum Reform,in order to find out how the reform is implemented and what the problems are.Findings are as follows.In the aspect of learning style,it is found that 100% of the demonstrators organized activities at least once in a lesson oriented to cultivate students learning style of active or autonomous learning.However,the frequencies and time spent vary.Some are over frequent in one lesson,some are too short to accomplish the tasks assigned in them.As for comprehensive quality oriented classroom teaching behaviors,results show that 100% of the lessons involve knowledge in other fields in their teaching.In regard to motivation oriented teachers' classroom question and feedback behaviors,findings indicate that some demonstrators adopted both positive and negative questions and feedbacks though in different frequencies.The problem is 4 of them used no negative questions or feedbacks,which amounts to 66.7%.As real life contents oriented teaching behaviors are concerned,it is found that all the demonstrators tried in many ways to link their teaching with the students' real life and experiences.Findings of learning strategy oriented classroom teaching behaviors illustrate that primary school teachers are aware of the significance of training students' learning strategies in actual teaching process.In the aspect of critical thinking and creative ability oriented classroom teaching behaviors,most of the them made some efforts to train students critical thinking and creative ability,however,open-ended questions are considerably few.Also,most of the questions are not in-depth.As to emotion,attitudes and values oriented classroom teaching behaviors,all of the teachers managed to design in one way or another to achieve the goal.Cultural consciousness oriented classroom teaching behaviors manifests that only one lesson involves,which is few in consideration of the six lessons.The findings indicate the demonstrators have understood,though in some different degrees,the New Curriculum Reform and tried in many ways in their practical teaching to realize them.However,we have to admit that there is much room for the improvement of classroom teaching in thatthere still exit problems or shortcomings.It is necessary to further the research and to deepen the reform.
