"Defamiliarization" is a theory proposed and systematized by Shklovsky,a leading figure of Russian Formalism. It figures out that some writing techniques used consciously in literature aim to enhance the literariness of works.Honggaoliang Jiazu is a classic novel written by Mo Yan,which is considered a pioneering work of New Historicism. The defamiliarized linguistic features and strange narrative perspectives help to highlight the whole novel.Howard Goldblatt translated this novel with Red Sorghum as its name and made it known by the English readers worldwide. In addition, the translation of literary works is much more difficult than other types of text because of its literariness and defamiliarization. Therefore, whether the defamiliarization of the source text can be represented in the target text is the key to measure the quality of a translation work.On the basis of the theory of defamiliarization, this thesis probes into the defamiliarized expression in Honggaoliang Jiazu through close reading, and makes a contrastive analysis with the representing of it in Goldblatt's translation, through which to conclude the effect of representing defamiliarization in Red Sorghum as well as the translation methods and tactics used in the translation.Six chapters are included in this thesis:Chapter One is the introduction,in which there is a brief introduction to Honggaoliang Jiazu and Red Sorghum,And it also includes the research background, research significance and purpose as well as the structure of this thesis. The current research situation and results of Honggaoliang Jiazu and the defamiliarization in literary translation as well as the Defamiliarization theory are covered in Chapter Two and Chapter Three respectively.Chapter Four is the contrastive analysis of the representation of defamiliarization of Honggaoliang Jiazu in Red Sorghum from four levels:the lexical level, the syntactical level, the rhetorical level and the cultural level. And then is Chapter five:a critical thinking of translation of defamiliarization. It consists of two parts.Firstly,by summarizing the translation method and techniques used by Goldblatt in the translation of defamiliarization,it is found that,on the lexical level, the translator used literal translation, imitation and coined new words to represent the abnormal collocation of the source text;on the syntactical and rhetorical level, imitation and analogical translation was used to preserve the special sentence patterns and defamiliarized figures of speech of the source text;and in order to retain the original cultural images and decrease the possibility of the losses of defamiliarization for the cultural difference, the translator tried to imitate the defamiliarization created on the cultural level of the source text.Secondly,an analysis is made to explain the influence that the lack of translation of defamiliarization of the source text.Chapter Six is the conclusion, which concludes the translation and representation of defamiliarization of Honggaoliang Jiazu in Red Sorghum,,and finds out that the defamiliarization of the source text,to great extents, has been represented in Red Sorghum,Meanwhile, some defamiliarization of the source text was not translated in the target text, which certainly causes some losses of original creative images, and to some extent, affects the completion of representing of the original artistic style.
