On The Translator's Subjectivity Of Yang Xianyi And His Wife In The English Version Of Chinese Literature(1979-1999)

The English version of Chinese Literature,founded in 1951 and suspended in 1999,was the only official publication of Chinese literature in the West after 1949.The literary works published in the magazine from 1979 to 1999 were selected and translated with the standards and intentions that are characteristic of the time.Yang Xianyi and his wife Gladys Yang,two major translators of Chinese Literature,translated and published a large number of excellent Chinese classical,modern and contemporary literary works in it.In order to stress the importance of their translator's subjectivity,it is necessary to explore the subjective and objective elements influencing their translator's subjectivity through a comparative study of the source text and the target text.This thesis mainly discusses the translator's subjectivity of Yang Xianyi and his wife in the English version of Chinese Literature.It is of certain theoretical value and practical significance to the study of their translator's subjectivity,as well as to current translation of Chinese literature.This thesis sorts out the translated works published by Yang Xianyi and his wife in the English version of Chinese Literature from 1979 to 1999.In combining Yang Xianyi and his wife's translation thoughts and the internal and external influencing factors of their translator's subjectivity,the thesis makes a descriptive analysis of their translator's subjectivity in literary and non-literary translation.Finally the thesis evaluates their translator's subjectivity and explores how to exert it reasonably.Through analysing the couple's text selection,translation strategies and the effects of their translation,the study concludes that under the influence of multiple factors like text,culture and society,Yang Xianyi and his wife reasonably exert their translator's subjectivity in the translation of the magazine and give full play to their creativity on this basis.
