In Chinese language and culture teaching,more emphasis is laid on proper application of learning experience and methods in diverse academic fields into different levels and aspects of Chinese teaching with students as the subjects.Thematic teaching is an approach in which teachers organize the learning contents based upon the theme and learning objectives so as to stimulate the motivation as well as to consolidate the dominant position of students in the learning process.Studies and exploration on application of thematic teaching into Chinese teaching as a foreign language have critical meaning.At present,studies combining thematic teaching and Chinese culture teaching have laid emphasis on intermediate and advanced levels.Studies combining thematic teaching and preliminary culture teaching are lacked.Through teaching practices,it is found that students at preliminary level possess keen on cultural knowledge.Input of cultural knowledge can promote the Chinese language learning process of students.It is necessary and feasible to combine thematic teaching with preliminary cultural teaching.This thesis based upon Chinese cultural teaching with thematic teaching methods at preliminary stage makes a case study on Coffs Harbour High School where the author once taught lessons.Thematic cultural teaching at preliminary stage enriches the cultural teaching patterns and enhances students' interest in Chinese learning.This thesis,through interview and questionnaire,analyses the problems in thematic cultural teaching.It is shown that thematic cultural teaching plays an essential role in enhancing students' dominance in learning and helping students to better establish theoretical system,having practical meaning in construction of Chinese cultural system.This thesis fills the vacancy in relevant academic field,enriches cultural teaching patterns in Chinese teaching as a foreign language,and offers reference for future studies on thematic teaching and cultural teaching.
