This article is mainly based on the 10-month teaching internship at Woodstock Elementary School in Portland Public School District in the United States from 2018 to 2019.Through the collection,analysis,classification and induction of theoretical and empirical results in the pertinent literature,the author combines the first-line teaching resources and thinking in the United States to discuss advantages of the cultural thematic teaching in the Basic Chinese Class in American Elementary School,and give the specific steps of the teaching design.This article hopes to bring some inspiration and help to Chinese teachers in elementary schools and Confucius Institutes in the United States,and make a useful supplement to the development of Chinese education in American elementary schools.The full article mainly includes five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction.As the opening part,the main content includes the purpose and significance of the topic,as well as relevant research reviews and research methods.The second chapter is an overview of thematic teaching theory,including second language input theory,John Dewey’s "incidental learning" concept,Common Core State Standards for American elementary and middle schools,constructivist linguistics and multiple intelligence theory.The third chapter mainly elaborates the Chinese classroom of the Confucius Institute at Portland State University in Oregon,including the analysis of the teaching status of Woodstock Elementary School,the analysis of the existing problems and the necessity of adopting thematic teaching.The forth chapter is the Chinese cultural thematic teaching design,including teaching content setting,teaching plan display,teaching implementation and feedback and comparative experiment.The fifth chapter is the summary and reflection on the teaching of Chinese cultural thematic teaching for zero-bases Chinese class in the United States.Finally,for the conclusion part,I analyze the results of the research and put forward the shortcomings,I also make some advices of the research about thematic teaching and show the prospects of the future.
