With the development of globalization,talents in twenty-first century must be able to speak fluent oral English.Although oral English teaching is the basis and starting point of English teaching in the primary school,it has not been paid adequate attention to in China's rural primary schools.The reasons for them are: on the one hand,the entrance examination does not include oral English,which leads the relevant leaders and teachers in the rural primary schools to ignore the oral English teaching;on the other hand,the rural primary school English teaching is still influenced by the traditional teaching mode,and both the teachers' teaching and the students' learning are examination-oriented.Therefore,there is still a big gap between the oral English teaching in rural primary schools and the requirements of the “New Curriculum Standard”.“Dumb English” has become a true portrayal of rural primary school students' English learning.By means of students questionnaires,interviews with teachers and classroom observations in four rural primary schools in Tongcheng City,Anhui Province,this paper analyzes the present situation of oral English teaching: Firstly,English teachers,students and parents in rural primary schools neglect the cultivation of the students' oral English ability.Secondly,English teachers' professional qualities are not high enough to make full use of modern teaching facilities.Thirdly,the students English-learning lack of a good language environment and fine psychological quality,etc..As a result,at present the rural primary school students' oral English abilities are quite low,which exert negative influence on their future English learning and hinders their overall development.In view of the above situation,the author puts forward some corresponding countermeasures: attaching importance to the oral English teaching in rural primary schools,improving the professional quality of rural primary school English teachers,creating a good English learning environment and making full use of modern teaching equipment,etc.in order to enhance the quality of oral English teaching in rural primary schools.
