A Report On The E-C Translation Of Python Projects For Kids(Excerpts)

This translation report is an English-Chinese translation one and it is based on the author’s translation practice.The source text(ST)is excerpted from Python Projects for Kids by Jessica Ingrassellino.The ST introduces the basic knowledge and installation of Python,variables,functions,users,calculators,and control statements in Python.As a popular science text,the source text is similar to and different from those texts of science and technology and literary works in style.Therefore,in the process of translation,the primary problem to be solved should be focused on how to reflect the simplicity and accuracy of popular science text and its literariness,popularity and amusement under the influence of literary style.As a result,with the guidance of the basic principles of stylistics,this report summarizes the corresponding stylistic features from the lexical,syntactic and discourse levels,and describes the translation processing which is targeted in these features.At the lexical level,as the ST has professional terms,quasi-professional terms,obvious tendency of nominalization and literariness,the translation methods corresponding to the ST are adopted.At the syntactic level,as the passive voices are used in the ST,the methods of conversion and retention are adopted respectively.At the same time,in order to show its popularity and amusement of the ST,the rhetorical devices and idioms are also used.At the textual level,this report focuses on logical relations and cohesion,and adopts repetition and ellipsis methods to reach the goal of textual cohesion.This translation report is divided into five chapters: The first chapter is an overview of this translation practice report,including the background of the topic,the purpose of writing,the brief introduction to the ST and the writer and the report structure.The second chapter is the description of translation process,including pre-translation preparation,translation problems,coping strategies and translation revision.The third chapter is concerned with stylistic principles,including the translation strategies and characteristics of popular science text,science and technology and literary style,the comparison between them and the relationship between popular science text and translation are stated.The fourth chapter is about case study.From the perspective of stylistic comparison,case studies at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels in combination with translation practice are performed.The fifth chapter is conclusion,consisting of the author’s summary in experience and limitations of thisreport writing as well as some suggestions for further translation practice of popular science text.
