This report focuses on the singular issue of how interpreters can shorten their reaction time in interpreting efficiently.A large number of students who major in interpreting may have encountered the situation where their instructors comment that their reaction time is too long when they start to practice interpreting. The author of the present study has also been bedeviled by long reaction time in practice. The failure of interpreters to balance their attention distribution can lead to such two situations: one is that the performance of interpreters is below the standard required, and the other is that long reaction time in interpreting can raise doubts about the proficiency of the interpreter from the audience, which is a significant issue for interpreters. Therefore, the issue of reaction time should be attached importance to by interpreting researchers. The report takes the author's interpreting experience as the object of research.A list of the author's reaction time is made based on the record of the interpretation, which was from Chinese to English around the theme of “Principles of Justifiable Defense and Self-endangering of Victims in Criminal Law”,and corresponding analysis is conducted. The task is intermediate in its level of difficulty. The discussion in regard to reaction time is conducted and some possible strategies are put forward for the interpretation that is within the interpreter's capability.Under the guidance of the Effort Models proposed by Gile, further analysis of the factors that may exert influence on reaction time is made based on the particular case of the task.According to the Effort Models, the process of consecutive interpreting is divided into two phases, the phase of input and output. And notes occupy an important position no matter in input or output, serving as a link between the two. Therefore, the key factors related to notes such as note-taking,short-term memory and note-reading are mainly discussed in this report. As a result, some possible approaches or strategies for quality interpretation are proposed to better balance the effort distribution in interpretation, shorten reaction time, and reach an ideal state of interpretation.
