Political literature refers to documents on major national and local policies of social and economic development issued by the Central Committee of the Communist Party, the State Council and local governments at all levels. As a channel for western readers to gain a better knowledge about China's development status-quo,polices and guidelines, translation quality of political documents not only determines the effect of China's international communication, but also influences the country's image to a large extent.Published in November 2017,Xi Jinping: The Governance of China(Volume Two)has drawn extensive attention from the international community and met a warm response from the world, hitting the highest record of circulation of Chinese leaders' books. From the perspective of Communication, translation is a special form of communication. The translator receives information from the source text producer and sends the processed information to the target readers, which resembles the process of communication.Communication values the dynamic process of communicating and stresses on communication effects, which provides a new insight into C-E translation of political literature. This thesis explores key elements involved in the process of C-E translation of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China(Volume Two)as a special form of communication and discusses translation strategies adopted to eliminate “noise” in linguistic, cultural and cognitive dimensions respectively with a focus on Lasswell's “5W” model and Verderber's “noise” concept.By using qualitative methods such as theoretical thinking and text analysis, this thesis answers two questions: First, what are the key elements involved in the translation process of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China(Volume Two)in light of Lasswell's 5W model? What are their roles? Second, which types of “noise” are there in C-E translation of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China(Volume Two)? How does the translator eliminate “noise” and what translation strategies or methods are adopted respectively? The author concludes that key elements involved in the process of C-E translation of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China(Volume Two)are: sender 1(author/Xi Jinping),sender 2(translators of this book),message(Xi Jinping: The Governance of China(Volume Two)),media(book),environment(social and physical environment where the Chinese version and English version were produced),audience(target readers),effect(translation effect and feedbacks from target readers),and so on.Target readers as the destination of the translation process decide whether translation is good and communication is effective. Thus, readability should be placed at the first place by translators. In C-E translation of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China(Volume Two),there exist linguistic “noise”,cultural “noise” and cognitive “noise”.To eliminate or minimize “noise” and increase readability of the translated text, flexible translation strategies and methods are adopted.
