Cultural default refers to the information the author omits when communicating with his target readers. But different people have different cultural backgrounds. If one party has certain information that is unknown to the other, this information will pose difficulties to their understanding. She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan is one of Jin Yong's most famous novels, and is well-known throughout the world. But there are seldom any translations in the market. The reason for this phenomenon is probably that there are too many cultural defaults in the book, which makes translating the book rather difficult.Swedish translator Anna Holmwood's translated version,Legends of the Condor Heroes became a bestseller after it hit the market. The author believes that she must excel in delivering the cultural defaults in the book to the readers. This research will take a research into the reason.Relevance Theory, which was proposed by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson, provides a great way to explain how the translator can successfully compensate for the cultural defaults in the original book.It has a strong power to explain many translation processes. In this thesis, the author will classify all the cultural defaults in the book into 5categories according to Nida's classification about culture, extract some typical examples and then try his best to analyze why the translator has succeeded in delivering the cultural defaults in the original book to the readers.Because the latest translated version of Legends of the Condor Heroes merely came out in the market in a short time, there are seldom any people who have taken researches in this book. The author hopes this thesis can be of a little help in the translation of Chinese martial arts fiction and the spread of Chinese culture.
