In consecutive interpreting, trainee interpreters produce ambiguous, illogical and incoherent messages in their renditions, often due to poor listening and notes. The lack of coherence tends to have a negative influence on the quality of interpreting.Coherence is therefore considered by many researchers as one of the most important contributing factor in assessing the quality of interpreting. As an important concept of text linguistics, coherence has also been a popular research focus. However, little research has been dedicated to integrating coherence with interpreting studies.Based on the author's interpretation for an education workshop, this report attempts to examine the impact of coherence on the quality of interpretation in English to Chinese consecutive interpreting. It highlights a number of illogical and incoherent interpretations and explores ways to improve the coherence of rendition. From this interpretation task, the author recognized the importance of fostering a sense of coherence. The author further learned that logical and coherent rendition can be delivered by either focusing on visible cohesive devices or inferring the meaning from the context.
