A Report On The Simulated English-Chinese Consecutive Interpreting Of The Speech On The Promotion Of East Asia Sugar Group

This paper is a report on a simulated English-Chinese consecutive interpreting of the speech on the promotion of East Asia Sugar Group and the author was the interpreter of the task. After the completion of this task, the author analyzed the transcripts of the interpreting recording.The analysis of the cases in this simulated interpreting task is under guidance of the Cohesive and Coherence Theory. Cohesion is an important feature of the discourse and the key point of the comprehension of the original text, which is an indispensable element to achieve discourse coherence. The author has held a discussion on how to employ the cohesive devices to achieve discourse cohesion and coherence based on the typical interpreting cases.The paper is divided into four parts, which includes the introduction, the description of the consecutive interpreting task, case study and the conclusion. Among these four parts, the focus falls onto the case study in which the author explored how to achieve cohesion and coherence in the interpretation on the basis of the Cohesion and Coherence Theory. In the case study, the author discussed the realization of discourse coherence by the use of cohesive devices at the lexical level and discourse level. Besides, the paper made a summary of the problems in the interpreting task and gave some suggestions on the improvement of interpretation quality by the use of cohesive devices.
