Interpreting Practice Report At The 2017 Red Cross Society Of Hunan Branch "Belt And Road" Seminar

Based on the interpreting practice in the Red Cross Society of Hunan Branch seminar,the author completed the interpreting practice report through the transcript.During the process,the author realized the importance of logical connectives for discourse cohesion through referring to the relevant materials about textual cohesion.The aim of this report is to study and discuss the role of English logical conjunctions as cohesive devices in ensuring textual cohesion.Chinese logic is implicit while English logic is explicit.Therefore,when interpreting from Chinese to English,interpreters are required to correctly analyze the logical relationship in the source language.Thus,when we are interpreting Chinese into English,logical connectives can be employed subjectively and actively to highlight the logical relationship in English,which is in line with the characteristics of English logic.Through different examples extracted from this interpretation practice transcript,the author found that there were three major problems for the use of logical connectives in this interpreting practice.The problems were missing logical connectives,wrong logical connectives and redundant logical connectives.And these connectives which were used improperly are generally classified into four types.The functions of these connectives are as follows: addition or amplification,contrast or opposition,cause or effect and time sequence or logical sequence.Guided by the textual cohesion theory,the author summarized three corresponding interpreting strategies: adding logical connectives,correcting logical connectives and omitting logical connectives.These strategies were summarized according to the distinct features between Chinese and English.As we all know,parataxis is a dominant feature of Chinese while English features hypotaxis.Logical connectives are seldom used in Chinese,but they are commonly used in English.Therefore,the interpreters are supposed to utilize various methods to deliver the message better.In addition,the interpreter also concluded a series of experiences acquired from this interpretation practice.For example,the author realized the significance of preparation for background information and the importance of allocating preparation time for different tasks properly.
