Film Adaption Of Liaozhai

Strange Tales of LiaoZhai is the pinnacle of Chinese mythical classics of Qing dynasty and has often been adapted into films since the advent of the first Liaozhai film Qing Xu Meng in 1922.Movies about Strange Tales of LiaoZhai have an important position in the Chinese film history.Compared with the four great classical novels,the brief and concise stories of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai,its complete image and plot make it so easy for being adapted to films that a unique film adaptation phenomenon is formed.The thesis will take the film adaptation situation as the research object and discuss it from the following three parts.The first chapter is an overview of the screen adaptations of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai.The first section first introduces the important works of literary adaptation of film in the history of Chinese film,and then analyzes the unique cinematic style of the novels of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai;the second will review the screen adaptations of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai chronologically;the second section analyze the reasons why Strange Tales of LiaoZhai has been widely adapted into a film in terms of the original text,mass psychology and production cost and social reform.The second chapter will elucidate the various themes in film adaptations of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai.The theme is the soul of the film— reflecting the creators' outlook on life and values and perception of life.Whether a film is a hit or not,fully expressing the theme of thestory is a key factor.In the film adaptations of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai,the theme centers on love,as well as social criticism of the feudal rule,the corrupt imperial examination system and the brutal bureaucracy,the ecology awareness of the harmonious coexistence between human and nature,and the awakening of female consciousness.The third chapter will discuss the artistic features in the film adaptations of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai from four sections.The first section will analyze the narrative strategies of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai from three aspects: the change of narrative style,the creation of narrative space and the use of nationalized elements.In the second section,the audio-visual language of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai film adaptations will be interpreted from the perspectives of music,pictures,sound and dialogues.The third will study the characters in adaptations of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai and compare the typical male and female images.The fourth will analyze the expression forms of Chinese classical aesthetics in adaptations of Strange Tales of LiaoZhai,in terms of artistic conception,poetic lines,and implicit blanks.
