In the early 1890 s,foreign businessmen began to build oil pools at some commercial ports in China in order to further expand the kerosene market in China. These oil pools had been widely opposed by the Chinese officials and people because of their illegal construction and great harm.As a result, there was a series of negotiations between China and foreign countries on the problem of oil pool.It lasted for more than40 years in modern times, and experienced the process of continuous development and evolution, showing different characteristics at different stages. As far as the specific types of negotiation were concerned, the Sino-foreign oil pool negotiation includes location negotiation, security negotiation, management negotiation and tax negotiation,in which location negotiation was the main. These negotiations had a long time span and a wide spatial distribution, which were closely related to modern Chinese politics, economy and social life, and had a great impact on modern Chinese society. In the semi-colonial historical environment,China's achievements in oil pool negotiations were limited and controlled, and it had failed to effectively prevent foreign businessmen from building oil pools in China, which reflects the difficultiesof modern Chinese diplomacy. However,in order to safeguard national sovereignty and protect the interests of the people, the Chinese government had taken various measures to reduce the harm caused by the oil pool. The Chinese people were also actively involved in the negotiations of oil pools. They protested the construction of oil pools in various ways.As a cross-section of modern China's foreign negotiations, the oil pool negotiation reflects many aspects of modern diplomacy from the micro-level,and shows the many-sided connections of modern Chinese society.
