Numerals With Semantic Fuzziness And Their Translation

Numerals should not be simply regarded as the exact one to express the quantity,degree,time,distance or scope.The function of the fuzzy numerals can carry out implicit meanings.Many fuzzy numerals with magic use are of vital importance in depicting images of the Song lyrics.Meanwhile,the readers and translators may have difficulty in understanding and translating them.This study,taking Xu Yuanchong's translation of 300 Song Lyrics as a case,discusses the performance of fuzzy numerals in cultural images of Song lyrics and analyzes the translation strategies and principles.In 300 Song Lyrics,numerals appear 407 times,about two thirds of which are ones with semantic fuzziness.The author collects 117 data as the research object.With the assistance of the fuzziness theory,semantic fuzziness and the translation principles of semantic fuzzy numerals,two research questions are involved in this study: one is how to explain,analyze and classify the semantic fuzzy numerals from the aspect of semantic fuzziness;the other is how to summarize the relevant methods of translating numerals with semantic fuzziness.The semantic fuzzy numerals are classified into four groups(distinct fuzzy numerals,numerals related to culture and customs,numerals related to figures of speech and numerals related to fixed expressions)and four translation methods(literal translation,free translation,revision and omission)are concluded.The study can enrich the specific contents of semantic fuzziness,provide academic references for the study of semantic fuzziness of numerals and is also valuable for readers to understand English translation of numerals in 300 Song Lyrics.
