The previous studies on fuzziness show that fuzziness is one of the essentialcharacteristics of human thinking. Thus, fuzziness exists in human language and theclose connection between fuzzy theory and translation can be seen. Therefore, it isvery natural to introduce fuzzy theory into translation study. The object of this thesisis focused on the numerals with semantic fuzziness. The present writer attempts tostudy the translation of numerals with semantic fuzziness in the light of fuzzy theory.By analyzing and comparing the translation in three English versions of The Story ofthe Stone (translated by David Hawkes, Bencraft Joly and Yang Hsien-yi&GladysYang respectively), the present writer will explore the causes of semantic fuzziness ofnumerals, the classification of fuzzy numerals, their pragmatic functions and thespecific translation strategies.The writer begins to place emphasis on the frequently used numerals and thevaried translation methods of them in classical literature in the course of translationstudy and research. Without a doubt, The Story of the Stone is selected as the researchtext. On the basis of cognitive semantics and dynamic equivalence theory,mathematical statistics and other documents are introduced in the thesis in order tostudy the translation of fuzzy numerals in The Story of the Stone.The layout of the thesis is designed scientifically. First of all, the writer gives ageneral account of previous studies on fuzziness and makes an introduction on thedefinition of semantic fuzziness and the numerals with semantic fuzziness in the first two parts. In part three, after analyzing the numerals with fuzziness in The Story of theStone, the writer attempts to classify them in a comprehensive way and present thefunctions of them. In the fourth part, the translation principles and strategies areconcluded. Moreover, the last part is about the significance of the thesis and theconclusion.To sum up, the focus of this thesis is placed on the numerals with semanticfuzziness and their translation. At the same time, it will broaden the sphere of furtherstudy on semantic fuzziness. It presents principles and methods for translatingfuzziness of numerals and has certain academic value and instructional significance inregard to the translation of numerals. These strategies in the thesis enable a translatorto cognize the numerals with semantic fuzziness and produce translation of higherquality.
