Along with the level of people's life continuing to rise, more and more ways appear to entertain modern people.Among these ways, games, especially online games, are appealing more attention from people. The creation, design and development of games often do not stem from the inspiration, but rely on one or some IPs(Intellectual property),seeking factors that can be learned, adapted, and even subverted from the classic texts that have been created long time ago. Then, the games utilize people's intimacy with stories and backgrounds to develop the game. The online card game Legends of The Three Kingdoms is one of them.It was born from the historical masterpiece The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the historical book Records of the Three Kingdoms.Based on absorbing the source text, this game constantly added its unique elements of innovation. After its development for ten years, this game has become a classic game loved by both new and old players. The success of this game,as well as its positive usage of IP,is a very interesting and worthwhile phenomenon, and it can also make an example in studying similar games. But after ten years of development,Legends of The Three Kingdoms also showed signs of lacking dynamism, and the reconstruction of some texts is difficult to be accepted by the audience. At the same time,as an interactive text, because Legends of The Three Kingdoms enjoys such characteristics as,profound influence, wide range of spread and huge number quantities of audience etc.,a deep impact on the audience has created by the text itself, which made it a subject for other text form to imitate and deconstruct, and hatched a number of re-creation art forms based on Legends of The Three Kingdoms. However, during this process,a remaining problem as “no prestige,no income” is worth reflecting.By applying the theoretical framework of intertextuality and with a thorough intertextual strategy, this paper conducts a cross-text analysis of the game Legends of The Three Kingdoms and focuses on the different meanings of game texts, constituent elements, interactive dialogues, etc.in order to inspect the process of reference between the interrelated texts of Legends of The Three Kingdoms. The first chapter of this paper mainly analyzes the achievements of predecessors in game research, game intertextuality research and related research fields of Legends of The Three Kingdoms. The second chapter introduces the classification of games, focusing on the reason why card game represented by the game Legends of The Three Kingdoms is compatible with the theory of intertextuality, and what exploration relating to rule and control aspects of the game Legends of The Three Kingdoms should be carried out.The third to the fifth chapters are the main analysis parts of this paper.By using the three main intertextual methods of allusion and archetype, merger and paste, play and imitation, these chapters make the elements in the game and the source text to form an intertextual relationship one to one correspondence in order to develop an in-depth and organized case study of the game Legends of The Three Kingdoms in the view of intertextuality. The sixth chapter summarizes the use of intertextuality theory in the process of game creation and how to more properly combine the relationship between the game and its associated IP,in order to provide reference for the subsequent game creation. At the same time,we will discuss the shortcomings of this paper and the prospects for the future.
