Translation Of Culture-loaded Words In Pound's Cathay From The Perspective Of Bassnett's Cultural Translation Theory

For a long time,many translators have been attempting to translate literary text,and the exploration of literary translation is inseparable from poetry translation.Literary translation is exceedingly difficult,hence,it has always made many translators exhausted.Poetry is not only concise,but also contains a lot of unique connotations of Chinese culture,therefore,the translation of poetry is even more difficult than the translation of other translated texts in literary translation.Pound is a well-known translator in the translation of Chinese poetry.So this study attempts to explore Pound's translation of culture-loaded words in his translation of poetry.Through this method,some experience can be learned from his translation of Chinese poetry.And this study classifies the culture-loaded words in Cathay into five groups according to Nida's classification of culture-loaded words.Based on this classification,this research explores the translation methods of various culture-loaded words from the perspective of Bassnett's cultural translation theory.In other words,instead of the translation of the literal meanings,this research will put more emphasis on the cultural transmission,in which the translator should convey the culture in the original language to the target readers.What's more,the translator should do everything he can to help the target readers comprehend the meanings of the author.In this way,this thesis attempts to explore Pound's creative translation method,and to conclude the implications of his translation of the poetic culture-loaded words.The conclusions of this study are as follows: 1)A variety of translation methods are used in the translation of Cathay,including literal translation,paraphrase,annotation,generalization,creative treason,substitution and omission;2)In general,Pound uses paraphrase most in the translation of all kinds of culture-loaded words while he also prefers literal translation and substitution in the translation of ecological culture-loaded words and material culture-loaded words;3)Not obsessed with the accuracy of literal translation,Pound used creative treason in almost all kinds of culture-loaded words to convey the meaning of Chinese poetry;4)There are several translations of culture-loaded words where Pound lost the connotations of the original text,especially in religious culture-loaded words;5)In the translation of culture-loaded words about color,Pound uses “blue” to translate “?” and “?” in Cathay almost from beginning to end.Although this kind of translation is correct sometimes,it also leads to some “mistranslations”;6)Pound tends to use “omission” when there are two culture-loaded words whose meanings are similar in adjacent sentences in one poem.
