Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu is one of the representative works of the famous Bashu culture scholar Mr.Yuan Tingdong. The English translation of the book was completed by MTI students of Sichuan Normal University. It is hoped to help Chengdu culture “go global” through the translation practice of this book.Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu is the first work that vividly describes the history and culture of Chengdu through the streets and alleys of Chengdu, especially the modern history and culture. It contains a strong native-soil culture. The book tells the naming of streets, rivers, bridges and schools, historical changes, important historical events and folk activities in Chengdu.Due to the particularity of the source text,a large number of culture-loaded words are involved in the text.Culture-loaded words play an important role in the inheritance and communication of culture, and Chengdu culture,as the core of Bashu culture,is of great significance. At the same time, with the rapid development of China's economy and politics, the influence of Chinese culture is also very important, and cultural translation has become an important communication medium. With the rapid development of information technology and frequent exchanges, translators have also paid more attention to cultural functional equivalence.Translation work is not limited to the linguistic level, but also needs to study the cultural level rooted in the language.Among cultural translation theories,SusanBassnett's cultural translation theory is the most famous one, especially her analysis on language and culture and translation equivalence, which provides a scientific perspective for translation. This paper is guided by Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory. At the same time, the author divides the culture-loaded words appearing in the Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu into five categories according to Nida's cultural classification and discusses these culture-loaded words in detail in the translation cases.Different translation methods such as literal translation, free translation, transliteration and amplification are flexibly adopted and the translation of these culture-loaded words is discussed one by one in an effort to achieve cultural equivalence.
