Editing Translated Text For Cohesion And Coherence

With the continuous improvement of translation technologies and the changes in the needs of translation market,traditional workshop-styled translation mode will soon,if not has already been out of place.Currently,translation environment has become increasingly integrated.This environment consists typically of Machine Translation,Computer-Aided Translation tool,and Translation Project Management system.Texts generated from such environment are output of Machine Translation and the fuzzy matches of translation memory.To make sure that such texts are readable,the translator needs to post-edit for them.The concept of Post-Editing was initially proposed in the context of Machine Translation.In the present thesis,however,Post-Editing is used in its broad sense.It refers to editing texts generated from an Integrated Translation Environment.Cohesion and coherence are very important features of a well-written text,be it originally composed or translated,for they define the readability of any text.In this study,I attempt to edit a sample text generated from an Integrated Translation Environment to make it more cohesive and coherent and ultimately to improve its quality.The text to be post-edited is a real text generated from an Integrated Translation Environment.The corresponding source text of this sample text is analyzed for its cohesion and coherence from the perspective of cohesion theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan.This sample text is edited for cohesion and coherence so that it will read with more of the ease of original composition.By editing the text generated from an Integrated Translation Environment for cohesion and coherence,I have,in the present thesis,extended the scope of Post-Editing to include things that has not been normally done in the workshop.Despite of this,limitations exist in the study.Measure of the extent of quality improvement of the translated text after Post-Editing is not established;Post-Editing for cohesion and coherence is not made on the basis of systematic comparison of originally written English texts and their Chinese counterparts.Both limitations are the defects of the present study,and they are also the aspects for future research.
