On Textual Coherence In Machine-based Chinese-English Translation And Post-editing Strategies

Coherence is the basic characteristic of a text.So in translation,the coherence of the targeted text should not be neglected.In Chinese-English translation studies,coherence problems are mostly focused on the cohesive level and mainly studied based on human translation texts.This paper,however,explored coherence problems at the semantic level in a machine translation based text.Based on the case study of a translation project the author has participated in,namely,the Chinese-English translation Evidence — 172 Comfort Stations in Shanghai,this paper analyzed typical coherent problems in the first post-editing during the project and proposed some post-editing strategies to further improve the coherence of the targeted text.The author hopes this paper will inspire post-editors of similar translation projects and provoke some thoughts on the coherence of machine translation.
