The Classification And Translation Of Cohesive Devices In English-Chinese Translation

The paper is a translation report,based on the English-Chinese translation of the eighth to fifteenth chapters of the autobiography Americanization of Edward Bok,mainly discussing the classification and translation of cohesive devices in English-Chinese translation.Cohesive devices make the context tightly connected and have a clear meaning and logic.Because the cohesive devices in English and Chinese are unique and quite different from each other,the comprehensibility and readability of a translation depends in part on the translation of the cohesive devices.In order to make a translation as fluent and natural as its original,translators must master the differences of cohesion devices in English and Chinese,and adopt appropriate translation strategies to convey the meanings of the original according to the context and the expression habits of the target language.Based on the theory of cohesion of Hanlliday and Hassan,according to the classification of the devices of English and Chinese and differences between them,the report makes a case study on the typical cohesive decvices used in the autobiography in order to explore the translation strategies of cohesive devices in English-Chinses translation,such as reapparence,retaining,omitting,reiteration and collation.The mian body of the report is case study,followed by a brief introduction to the project,generalities of the task,brief introduction to theory of cohesion.On the basis of the theory of cohesion,combined with the characteristics of Chinese,the report intends to explore the general translation methods of English cohesive devices in English-Chinese translation.
