A Report On The English Translation Of Once Again Deceived By The Fox From The Perspective Of Reception Theory

In the field of Chinese children's literature,Shen Shixi's children's literature is of great significance.Recently,the sales of Shen's works have accounted for 80% of the animal novel market,which proves his status as “the king of animal novels”.From the perspective of animals,his works present conflicts,joys and sorrows in the animal world.What's more,the vivid and humorous language of the works is popular among children.This report is based on the English translation of Shen's children's literature Once Again Deceived by the Fox.The stories of the book mainly refer to the fox and their exciting plots reflect the interdependence between human and animals.This report selects two representative stories for case study.During the translation,the author finds it's difficult to translate culture-loaded words,figures of speech and some scene descriptions since we should maintain the language style of the original text and represent the implied meaning.Thus,based on Reception Theory,the author analyzes specific cases according to readers' group and the aesthetic value of children's literature.Reception Theory consists of three main concepts: the central role of the readers,the horizon of expectations and the indeterminacy.From the case study,in order to keep the cultural images and meaning of culture-loaded words,the author adopts literal translation plus footnote and transliteration plus note or interpretation.While for the figures of speech,some translation methods,such as omission,amplification,domestication and substitution,are applied to cater for readers' reading habit and present the interest similar to the original text to the maximum extent.Furthermore,for some specific scene descriptions,the author adds necessary conjunctions,pronouns and nouns to ensure the coherence of the narration and relieve reading obstacles for readers.This report aims to figure out practical translation methods,make a contribution to promote the English translation of Chinese children's literature and improve the readability of the translation in the foreign countries.
