The time-honored drama culture has exerted far-reaching influence on Chinese civilization, and drama translation has also contributed enormously to the progression of human civilization. The dual identity of drama text makes the study of drama translation in a state of controversy for a long time, and scholars have always failed to reach a consensus on the question of whether “textuality” or “performability” is the primary principle in drama translation. The word “ethics(lunli)” has been existing in Chinese character since the ancient time, but it is used as two separate characters: “lun” and “li”.In ancient China, ethical thoughts with rich connotation have already emerged, but ethics at that time has not been established in the form of a discipline, let alone become a term with clear and fixed meaning.Until modern times,Chinese people begin to use “ethics” to refer to the laws and norms of interpersonal relationship.“Translation ethics” was first proposed by the French linguist Antoine Berman in the 1980 s,and later has been developed and supplemented by many scholars, which finally contributes to its rich and inclusive theoretical connotation.Taking the drama Gou Er Ye Niepan written by Jin Yun and its translation Uncle Doggie's Nirvana by Ying Ruocheng as the linguistic data, this thesis attempts to explore translation ethics in the C-E drama translation of Ying Ruocheng and mainly adopts the methods of qualitative research, case study and comparative analysis. This thesis is conducted through the following three steps.First, the author demonstrates the correlation between the four models of translation ethics(ethics of representation, ethics of service, ethics of communication and norm-based ethics)and drama translation, which serves as the foundation of the following study.Second, the manifestation of the four models in the English version of drama Gou Er Ye Niepan is fully discussed in order to reveal that the translator has been greatly influenced by translation ethics in the process of drama translation. Finally, based on the translation strategies and methods adopted by the translator, the potential ethical tendency of the translator is explored. After in-depth study, the author finds out that the application of translation ethics can help to represent the language characteristics of dramas, and it is very instructive for drama translation;also,Ying Ruocheng is greatly influenced by translation ethics, and all the four models can find full expression in the English version of drama Gou Er Ye Niepan;moreover,Ying Ruocheng prefers utilitarian translation ethics and his translation action tends to be more preventive.Translation activity is of ethical nature, and drama translation is even more so.This thesis studies translation ethics of Ying Ruocheng's C-E drama translation, with the slim hope to provide new ideas for the study of drama translation as well as to make beneficial exploration for the application of translation ethics to the study of drama translation.
