A Study Of C-E Simultaneous Interpreting Strategies From The Perspective Of Thematic Progression Pattern

Interpreting strategy is an important subject of interpreting studies.In order to ensure the successful completion of an interpreting task,interpreters apply various interpreting strategies to overcome difficulties.This thesis analyzes interpreting strategies in Chinese to English simultaneous interpreting from the perspective of Thematic Progression Pattern based on ThemeRheme Theory.Three 2018 ministerial-level press conferences during the NPC and CPPCC sessions and their simultaneous interpretation are selected as research materials to study interpreting strategy and its impact on Thematic Progression Patterns.The author analyzes different types of interpreting strategies that help to deal with syntactic difficulties in simultaneous interpreting,how application of interpreting strategies influences the organization of Thematic Progression Patterns and the communicative effects brought by Thematic Progression Pattern variation.Through qualitative research,this thesis concludes as follows: six interpreting strategies are used to deal with syntactic difficulties in simultaneous interpreting.These include paraphrasing,addition,omission,substitution,repetition and generalization.The use of interpreting strategies leads to variation of Thematic Progression Patterns of the original at textual level.There are mainly three types of variation patterns.In terms of information communication,variation of Thematic Progression Pattern narrows the connotative meaning but emphasizes the thematic meaning of the original information delivery.It also helps to overcome cultural communication barriers to improve simultaneous interpreting efficiency,improve discourse coherence to make target language information arrangement more reasonable.
