This thesis is a report on the author's E-C translation practice on the masterpiece Passing of Nella Larsen, one of the representative American novelists of Harlem Renaissance. The novel is characterized by its language performance, diversified types of speech and thought presentation, and rich cultural implications. This report describes the translation process and discusses the application of the strategy of prominence in fictional translation from the perspective of construal in cognitive linguistics.Firstly, defamiliarized language performance can produce vividness of poetic effects, bringing literariness to works. The defamiliarization of lexical cohesion and punctuation in Passing is reproduced by corresponding defamiliarization in accordance with the writer's intentions to make the defamiliarization prominent.Secondly, narrative focalizations determine reporting modes featuring their own aesthetic functions.Passing features free direct speech and free indirect speech. In order to distinguish the reporting modes and avoid ambiguity, the author adopts the translation methods of substitution of personal pronouns, addition of dashes and colloquialization of reporting modes to highlight the perspective and strengthen expressiveness of the text.Thirdly, the omission of shared background knowledge in communication is called situational default which consists of cultural default and contextual default.Regarding the vacuum of sense caused by sociocultural elements such as customs and concepts in Passing, the author employs the translation methods of footnoting and amplification, trying to make the connotation of the original text prominent by increasing the specificity of construal.
