Grade one in primary education is the starting phase of English learning.Due to the differences in students' languagecapabilities and their parents' attitudes towards English learning,primary school teachers face challenges in teaching English language effectively.On the one hand,teachers need to ensure the delivery of relevant knowledge to all students in a clear manner.On the other hand,much attention need to be paid to inspire students to learn and enjoy English learning,as well as to help students to form good habits of English learning and develop their English skills.As picture books are increasingly used in the teaching and learning among primary-school students,the development and use of picture books in English learningattracts attentions of scholars.This research focuses on the development and application of picture books in assignments,based on a practical project taken place in the JX primary school in the Pan Long District of Kunming City.This dissertation contains five chapters.Chapter 1 introduces the background and motivation of this research.It reviews Chinese and international literature on the use of picture books in teaching and discusses the concepts,methodologies and main arguments in this literature.Chapter 2 discusses the feasibilityof developing picture-book assignments.Based on pedagogical theories,this chapter analyses the features of the textbook “English(Beginners at Grade 1)”,and considers the teaching environment of the JX Primary school including its current situation in English teaching,the teaching team,student characteristics,the parents' attitudes towards English learning and the relevant policies.It is concluded in this chapter that the development of picture-book assignment will inspire primary students to learn English in grade one,thereby improve the quality of English teaching.Chapter 3 details the process of developing picture-book assignments.The developing process is guided by the module criteria and learning objectives of English module in Grade 1 and aimed to improve the teaching capability and skills of primary school teachers.This chapter investigates the principlesunderlining the development of the picture-book assignments,explains the design of them and elaborates the contents and characteristics of these assignments.Chapter 4 discusses the application of the picture-book assignments in practice andgives recommendations.It provides detailed design and reflections on the use of picture-book assignments in daily teaching activities.Chapter 5 concludes the development and use of picture-book assignments.It analyses the potential challenges and problems in adopting picture-book assignments in practices and give recommendations for future improvement.This research draws on a case study on the development and use of picture-book assignments in JX Primary School in Kunming.It investigates the feasibility and methods of using picture books in the English teaching of Grade 1 in primary schools.This research offers both theoretical and practical insights into the design and application of picture-book assignments in the daily practice of English teaching and learning.
