This research talks about the Giles Goat Boy(1966),which is the fourth novel of modernist writer,John Barth,in the United States.In the book,it illustrates the protagonist,a half man and a half goat,growing up in a shed.George finds his mission is to be a great teacher in the university.In the novel,the protagonist is a common “modern version of quest hero”in the myth.Many readers cannot easily understand the original text.Therefore,this paper adopts the methods of translating the original text into Chinese idioms to improve the translation quality.In order to improve the quality of translation and make readers have a better translation,this paper uses the colorful,vivid and expressive Chinese idioms to make the translation better.Choosing some individual words,phrases and sentences in the original text on the basis of loyalty,this paper summarizes them,and translates them into Chinese idioms by literal or free translation.In this paper,the focus is to translate the original text into Chinese idioms.In the first chapter of this paper,a definition of Chinese idioms is offered.Chinese idioms refer to a unique language form mainly composed of four Chinese characters and this paper summarizes the classification of the Chinese idioms.Secondly,this paper discusses the translation of Chinese idioms from the perspective of literary values,which are aesthetic value,communicative value and stylistic value.Thirdly,from the translation principle,it talks about the use of Chinese idioms from faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance.At last,this paper talks about the translation methods about using the Chinese idioms in the original text.In this way,readers can easily understand the content of the original text.
