| The project is selected from a U.S.politician Bernie Sanders’ book Our Revolution which mainly describes his political campaign and he,in the book, points out the issues that the U.S.has in the present.Because Our Revolution: A Future to Believe in is a political work that depicts the political climate currently in the U.S.,the utilization of passive rhetoric is the biggest characteristic. The use of passive rhetoric is to list the problems that the U.S.is facing and it is reasonable, logical and clear. Therefore,in the process of translation after an elaborate analysis of the source text, good translation and understanding of the use of passive rhetoric are the core issue of this thesis. The priority of the study is the E-C translation of passive rhetoric.Based on the analysis of the political discourse, the definition of passive rhetoric and the related literature are given. The translator analyzes passive rhetoric in the source text from three perspectives: lexicon, syntax and rhetoric and accordingly three translation principles are introduced: faithfulness, compromise and intelligibility.Lastly, under the guidance of the three translation principles listed above, three corresponding translation methods are concluded: extension, conversion and omission. In conclusion,in translating passive rhetoric, reason, logic and clearness should be shown. For translating the lexis,it should be under the guidance of intelligibility because the political systems between the U.S.and China are diverse. As for the translation of syntactic use and rhetoric, the principles of faithfulness and compromise are the guides.Accordingly, the translation method of extension is utilized for the lexis, the method of conversion for the syntax and omission for the rhetorical use.The translator expects that the study will serve a great reference for the generations to come in the fields of the passive rhetoric and passive rhetoric used in the political discourse. |
