By comparison of British writer Jane Austin's book Pride and Prejudice with its two Chinese versions translated by Sun Zhili and Li Xianmin, this essay, based on cognitive linguistics, focuses on the differences between English and Chinese passive sentences in expressions and Chinese translation skills, and the results of comparison and reflection on teaching. With qualitative and quantitative methods, it explains that English is featured by hypotaxis and Chinese by parataxis and discuss how to translate passive sentences in these two languages. Since the use of passive sentences are different in different languages, in order to ensure the translation is reasonable and frequent, a translator should not only pay attention to the difference of passive sentences between source language and target language but also should appropriately exchange expression methods to make the translation faithful, expressive and elegant.This essay is divided into five chapters.Chapter I. Introduction. First, it illustrates the present situation of domestic translation field and reviews the achievements and developments of English and Chinese passive sentences research made by domestic and foreign scholars in recent years, and it also describes the comparative translation of passive sentences at home. Second is the object of this topic and the theoretical methods which it utilizes. Finally is the research goal and the significance of this topic.Chapter II. Cognitive linguistics theory of passive sentence. This section mainly puts forward cognitive motivationality and analyzes them from cognitive linguistics aspects by combining with grammar, syntax, pragmatics and discourse functions.Chapter III. With the two Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice, this part does the comparative and quantitative analysis on passive sentences in translation. Randomly selecting some samples from the front ten chapters in volume I for quantitative analysis, it points out the overall expression means, distribution and the frequency use of English passive structure, and it discusses the treatments of passive sentences in English-Chinese Translation.Chapter IV. The results of comparison and reflection on teaching. By analyzing the structure of English and Chinese passive sentences, the different Chinese translation versions and different styles, it puts forward some constructive ideas to promote the translation teaching in the future.Chapter V. Conclusion. This essay compares the characteristics of English and Chinese passive sentences from a cognitive point of view, and finds out the similarities and differences on the expression of English and Chinese passive sentence. It makes reader getting a deeper understanding of the characteristics and translation model of English and Chinese passive sentences by comparing the two translation versions of Pride and Prejudice , which promotes better understanding of the different expression of the bilingual and helps to improve the appropriateness, accuracy, and relish of literary translation.
