A Report On The Translation Of Jiangxi Culture(Excerpts)

Language is the vehicle for culture that belongs to a nation as well as to the whole world.However,there are great differences between English and Chinese because Chinese and Western readers hold different thinking modes and customs.Therefore,to strengthen the soft power of Chinese culture and expand China's international impact,it is of great significance to spread Chinese excellent traditional culture to the world through ways of language expression that foreigners can understand.Jiangxi Culture,written by Fu Xiuyan,Ph.D.supervisor of Jiangxi Normal University and Lu Puling,master supervisor of Jiangxi Normal University,is the first published book belonging to Traditional Chinese Culture Quintessence Series.The book introduces the local customs in Jiangxi in detail from the aspects of landscape,famous figures,folk culture,cuisine,ceramics,etc.The report is based on the version of Chinese-English translation project of Jiangxi Culture.In the project,the author selected famous figures,dietary culture,academy culture and religious culture,more than 20,000 words to translate.A lot of proper nouns,culture-loaded words,four-character structures,special Chinese sentences,etc.have been found in the original text.The author has referred to many relevant books and parallel texts of cultural translation,and applied some translation methods and techniques,such as literal translation,literal translation with annotation,free translation,transliteration with annotation,amplification,etc.This report consists of four chapters.The first chapter introduces the background,content,significance of the project and the structure of this report.The theoretical framework and the translation process of the project are explained in chapter two.The theoretical framework is mainly Newmark's text typology,semantic translation and communicative translation.The translation process comprises three procedures,that is,pre-translation,during translation and post-translation.Chapter three analyzes the typical cases under the guidance of translation theory,and summarizes the translation strategies of regional cultural texts.The last part concludes the report in which the experience gained from translation,the limitations of the project and the unsolved problems are discussed.The author makes a brief analysis based on the translation of Jiangxi Culture.It aims to spread Jiangxi culture,one of the distinctive Chinese regional cultures,worldwide.It is the author's hope that this report can provide certain reference for similar translation practice and arouse people's awareness of the protection and communication of regional cultures in China.
