By means of theoretical and empirical studies, this thesis explores the effect of redundant information on the performance of C-E simultaneous interpreters and put forward strategies on how to improve simultaneous interpretation. It starts with information theory on the definition and classification of redundancy and Daniel Gile's Effort Model to demonstrate the effect of redundant information and the necessity of translation strategies as simplification, generalization and amplification, and then goes to justify these strategies with information theory. The introduction of related theories is followed by an empirical study designed to examine the effect of redundant information and the coping strategies.Six second-year student interpreters of GSTI trained for about four months in simultaneous interpretation were invited to interpret simultaneously an extract of an interview on CCTV Dialogue with the topic of Justin Yifu Lin's public lecture on investment.Criteria for performance evaluation are established, and statistical analysis conducted where quantitative analysis highlights the negative effect of redundant information on Chinese to English interpretation, and qualitative analysis confirms that the simplification, generalization and amplification strategies can to a great extent mitigate the negative effect and enhance interpreters' performance.Findings of the study demonstrate redundant information affects the performance of C-E simultaneous interpreters. The strategies, including simplification, generalization and amplification, prove to be effective for relieving time pressure and improve interpreters' performance.
