Since 1980s,a new trend,“cultural turn”took the lead in the field of translation studies. It geared traditional language and text analysis in translation research to a study concerning both texts and outside culture and society.AndréLefevere, the representative scholar in cultural turn proposed rewriting theory, which contends that translation is a rewriting of original texts, and it is impacted by ideology, poetics and patronage, thus reflecting characteristics in certain society and culture.Zhu Shenghao?1912-1944?is by far the most welcomed translator of Shakespeare?1564-1616?for common?non-professional?readers in China. In 1943,he finished the translation of Pericles,Prince of Tyre,a legendary play written by Shakespeare in his final composition days. The thesis believed,Pericles, the late work of Zhu Shenghao can reflect his translation features and elements influencing his translation in a more comprehensive way.Equipped with rewriting theory, the thesis explored Zhu Shenghao's rewritings in Pericles,Prince of Tyre from three factors.?1?At the beginning of 20th century,Chinese society was at the key point of transformation, new western culture swamped in and caused a mixture of new and old thoughts.Popular idea such as“Advocating new literature, overthrowing old literature”,“Literature for common people”left their traces on Zhu Shenghao and his translation.?2?In specific translation practice, classical Chinese literature and traditional culture remained unconsciously but profoundly in Zhu Shenghao. In Pericles,he exerted abundant elements from classical Chinese literature, besides, the translator rewrote chorus Gower to an anonymous story-teller.?3?Patronage Zhu Shenghao received was rare, which led to an inevitable divergence of translator's understanding on original text and therefore debased quality of translation. To conclude,Zhu Shenghao's translation is a reflection of contradiction of western culture and Chinese traditions, and a result of insufficient patronage.Meanwhile, the acceleration of appearance of new translations indicates a trend of deeper reading and study on Shakespearean plays.
