In the new century,a group of female directors appeared in the mainland film industry,and gained widespread public attention through their outstanding works which accepted social recognition.This is the second ?small peak? of the development of female directors in mainland China after the 1980 s.Although the number of female directors and their works cannot compare with that in the 1980 s,in terms of diversified styles,wide range of subjects and overall quality,the creation at this new stage,as it were,have representative and transcendental significance in the context of their development.On this basis,a distinct feature of female directors' creation in the new century is that the city has become the main regional space for most of their works to carry the story content.The seemingly ordinary phenomenon actually implies the particularity of gender experience written under the background of modernization and urbanization.It is related to specific gender groups and reflects the overall characteristics of the times,With the form of urban space,the creation of female directors not only cares for women's body,but also reveals women's psychological consciousness,which constructs the urban consciousness in their works in a specific era.Therefore,this paper takes the movies directed by female urban directors in mainland China in the new century as the research object,attempts to examine the urban consciousness conveyed by these works,explores women's problems in the context of specific times,and grasps the characteristics of the times through gender practice from the perspectives of culture,politics and aesthetics which are most closely related to image technology,real society and gender proposition.The first chapter of the main part of this article explains the significance of the city to the creation of female directors.On the basis of a general overview of female directors and their creations in the new century,it is pointed out that the focus on urban topics in this paper is not only because they are the narrative background of most films,but also because they are the specific exploration of individual and group psychological projection and body perception in urban space,based on the premise of gender experience differentiation in the era of urban and rural overall development.Discuss the cultural trend of city as a spatial form,the intertwining of social class identity and gender politics,and the aesthetic pursuit of modernization in these films.The paper then discusses it from three perspectives: culture,politics and aesthetics.The second chapter mainly elaborates the characteristics of urban culture in the new century,and then discusses the interaction between female directors' creation and urban culture.On the basis of sorting out the creative context of female directors in mainland China,this paper expounds that at the cultural level,the relationship between ?female consciousness? and ?elite consciousness? in the creation of female directors is actually the same thing.Therefore,when encountering the urban culture of the new century,the creation of female directors has gone through the process of deviating from the mainstream and the masses to returning to them.Chapter three,in the context of urban culture,explores the political appeals that female directors want to convey through the three stratums of bottom women,intellectuals and middle-class women shown in the film.Bottom women reflect the predicament of women subject under the oppression of capital and patriarchy in the process of modernization;Intellectual women are representatives of women's involvement in the public sphere,but they highlight the unequal family division of labor system;middle-class women are largely the product of “her economic “background,they show that women occupy the initiative of consumption and strive to subvert visual power,However,the subversive significance of media imagination level needs to be examined.In urban cultural background,chapter four discusses the aesthetic transformation of female director's creation in the new century from monologue to dialogue on the aesthetic level.In the early stage,female directors paid more attention to the establishment of "individual city" through the self-expression of female desires and the restoration of female history.And influenced by commercialization and mass consumption culture,their works gradually moved from individual stage to mass stage.Mainly through urban experience especially emotional experience,as well as the creation of urban wonders to build a "mass city" to attract audiences.Finally,the author believes that the urban consciousness of female directors in the new century is the strong manifestation of gender experience in the urban context of the specific era,but there are also some phenomena such as single-class orientation,which are guided by marketization and consumer culture.The complex context of the new century is not only a challenge for female directors,but also an opportunity.For them,it is the next issue worthy of consideration and exploration to rely on urban space to melt women's emotions and experiences into works,to form the characteristics of women's creation in a specific era,and to maintain the concern for women's issues.
