A Study On The Translator's Subjectivity As Exemplified In Half A Lifelong Romance By Karen Kingsbury From The Perspective Of Manipulation Theory

With the rise of descriptive translation studies and the cultural turn of translation,translator's subjectivity has gradually entered the field of translation studies.Moreover,more and more scholars combine it with other relevant theories for text analysis and theoretical extension.Therefore,combining translator's subjectivity with relevant theories to study the translation of Chinese classical literature is an excellent choice for overseas promotion of Chinese culture.This thesis takes the three elements of manipulation theory as the entry point and makes a qualitative study of Karen Kingsbury's translation based on Half a Lifelong Romance to deeply explore how Kingsbury manipulates the translation process and plays her subjective role in text selection,translation strategies and methods,translation styles under the influence of ideology,poetics,patronage and other factors,so as to make her translation widely accepted by English readers.This thesis finds that although the translator will be affected by various factors in the process of translation,as the subject of translation,the translator plays a key role in many aspects,such as the selection of translation materials,translation strategies and methods and so on,the refraction on the whole process and the effect of the translation.Only by flexibly and appropriately giving full play to the translator's subjectivity and correctly dealing with the internal and external factors of the text can excellent translations be made and the purpose of translation be achieved.At the same time,the study of this thesis has certain reference significance for translators engaged in C-E translation,and hopes that C-E translation will play a greater and more active role in advocating overseas promotion of Chinese culture.
