A Practice Report On English-Chinese MTPE Methods Of Patent Description

In recent years,economic globalization has accelerated China's domestic localization industry.The localization business involves a wide range of fields,in which the localization of patent description accounts for a large proportion.As the international business of patent description grows,the working mode of “machine translation(MT)+ post-editing(PE)” is considered to greatly shorten working hours and improve efficiency.There is a great number of domestic and foreign research on PE strategies and guidelines,but little on specific PE methods.The thesis summarizes the relevant PE experience based on the author's EnglishChinese(E-C)MTPE practice of patent description(including medical equipment,optical electronic product,etc.)in E Corporation Project Department(ECPD).Referring to the text features of patent description,the author analyzes and classifies common MT errors,including accuracy,vocabulary,language and style,and formatting.Under the guidance of Ernst-August·Gutt's relevance translation theory,the author proposes corresponding PE methods and demonstrates them with specific cases,including replacement,supplementation,omission,addition,sequence edit,punctuation edit,rewriting,alteration and deletion.Hopefully,the classification of MT errors and the practice of PE methods for these errors in the thesis provide some reference for novice post-editors and those who are willing to work for PE.
