This paper is a translation practice report.The source text is selected from Problem Solving Activities in Post-editing and Translation from Scratch: A Multi-method Study.This text belongs to academic text on science and technology,in which there are many repeated terms and common sentence patterns.The information is expressed or explained clearly.Therefore,machine translation(MT)has high applicability for this kind of text.Youdao online translation is selected from the major online translation platforms.The tool performs well in translating some common or simple terms and some simple sentences,and can quickly obtain acceptable translations.However,due to the complexity of translation and languages,there are still some drawbacks of MT,such as mistranslation and omission of polysemous words,abstract words and rare words.When translating long sentences and passive sentences,MT does not consider readers,which leads to structural disorder and unacceptable translation.At the discourse level,MT is failed to analyze the context,resulting in redundancy and logical confusion.Therefore,in order to make the translation of MT meet the professional requirements,the output is edited from two aspects,one is producing more contextual effects,the other is saving processing efforts for reader under the guidance of Relevance Translation Theory.Translation skills include amplification,paraphrase,omission,restructuring,explanation and conversion.It is hoped that the translation and post-editing(PE)methods of this paper can provide some enlightenment for the translation of academic text and MT researchers.At the same time,it is also believed that with the development of new technology,MT can more effectively help translators to improve their efficiency and translate higher-quality translation works with human translators.
