Grammar is the basis of language learning and language use,so grammar teaching plays a very important role in English teaching.Grammar teaching enables students to have a clear and systematic understanding of English language rules,which is conducive to helping students establish language norms.With the college entrance examination innovation,the present situation of English grammar teaching has aroused people's thinking.In senior high school,many English teachers prefer grammar teaching and design many mechanical exercises for students to practice grammatical knowledge,but some English teachers deliberately neglect grammar teaching.They only pay attention to the cultivation of students' communicative ability.The lack of interest of students in learning English grammar and the inappropriateness of teachers' teaching methods to the current learning situation have become common phenomenon in practical grammar teaching.Shu Dingfang and Zhuang Zhixiang hold that “the position and function of grammar in the whole foreign language teaching is no longer a question of whether grammar should be taught or not,but of what and how to teach it”(2008:108).“What to teach”mainly refers to the scope of grammar in English teaching.“How to teach” refers to what kind of teaching methods that teachers choose in different grammar teaching content.How to improve the efficiency of English grammar teaching in senior high schools has become a problem that many teachers and researchers are actively exploring.In order to research the present situation of English grammar teaching in senior high schools,the author conducted a questionnaire among 214 students and 24 teachers from Jilin M Middle School,and interviewed 15 students and 6 teachers.The purpose of this study is to answer the question: What's the present situation of English grammar teaching in senior high schools? The results show that the teaching level of English grammar in senior high schools has been improving continuously and English grammar teaching has been attached great importance in recent years.Most students can master some English grammar in the process of learning,but there are still some problems in grammar teaching and practical use of learners.Students' unclear grammar knowledge and confused grammar knowledge structure are related to the monotonous and vapid grammar teaching.Students hope that teachers can adopt grammar teaching methods which are suitable for their learning situation to improve their learning efficiency and interest.In the aspect of grammar teaching,teachers also generally believe that students' mastery of grammar is unsatisfactory and their language output is seriously inadequate.Due to the pressureof class hours and achievements pursuit,some teachers still use traditional grammar translation methods,and it's in the low frequency of using other foreign language teaching methods.This thesis is divided into five parts.The first chapter is introduction.The author in this part mainly introduces the research background,research question and research significance of this study,also introduces the framework of this thesis.The second chapter is literature review.First,author introduces the concepts of grammar and grammar teaching,and expounds the teaching methods which are commonly used in grammar teaching and the teaching principles of English grammar in senior high schools,then analyzes the requirements of grammar knowledge and grammar teaching in the English Curriculum Standard for General Senior High Schools(2017 edition).Finally the author summarizes the research status of English grammar teaching methods both at home and abroad.The third chapter is research design.The author in this chapter mainly introduces the purpose and participants of this study.Meanwhile,the author introduces the research tools,and then clarifies the process of the investigation.Finally the author analyzes the results of the investigation.The fourth chapter is about the current situation of English grammar teaching in senior high school.Based on the results of the survey study,the author analyses the present situation of English grammar teaching in senior high schools and puts forward some suggestions for improving the efficiency of English grammar teaching for students and teachers respectively:students should establish the concept of grammar learning,and form correct awareness of grammar learning.Also,they should learn how to summarize systematically and sort out the grammar knowledge they have learned,and do more appropriate reading and grammar writing exercises after class.Teachers should attach importance to the functional principles of grammar teaching,and the grammar knowledge will be explained systematically and hierarchically.Meanwhile,teachers should constantly renew their self-knowledge,and adopt flexible grammar teaching methods.The author hopes it will be helpful to English grammar teaching.The fifth chapter is conclusion.In this part,the author summaries mainfindings as well as the limitations of this study,also puts forward suggestions for further research.
