The painting taking classical Chinese garden as the theme is a kind of painting form appended to Chinese ancient gardens and a unique subject type in Chinese painting.In the mid-Ming Dynasty when economy was booming,scholars built private gardens in cities,yearning for having the ideal habitat of soul in cities.With the large-scale construction of gardens,the paintings taking classical Chinese garden as the theme have entered an unprecedented prosperous development stage.As one of the “Four Wu's families”,Wen Zhengming was an outstanding representative painter in the middle of the Ming Dynasty.He created many paintings that express garden and grounds life.He is one of the painters I studied mainly during the three years of postgraduate study.The artistic style of his garden paintings is uniquely new.While laying stress on natural "producing artistic conception",he also strives to show an artistic conception similar to the supernatural and serene metaphysical realm appreciated by famous scholars in Jin and Tang Dynasties.His paintings are ingenious in conception,rigorous in layout,beautiful in brush and ink,elegant in color,emotional in scenery and blending scene with emotions.This article mainly has a discussion from the following three aspects: Firstly,it briefly discusses the historical origin and artistic style of Wen Zhengming's landscape painting,starting the study from the historical origin of Wen Zhengming's paintings,and through several representative works.And it deeply interprets the artistic style of its landscape theme painting in terms of layout,brush and ink,color design,artistic conception,etc.Secondly,apply Wen Zhengming's artistic style to creation and transformation on the basis of copying and sketching.Third,it is the perception and thinking in the creative process.I have a deeper understanding of landscape painting through combing the related theories and works of Wen Zhengming's landscape paintings and constantly trying and summarizing in the creation of serene Quyuan series.
