Lyrical calligraphic inscriptions for pictures have been an indispensable component of literati paintings since landscape literati paintings became mainstream in Yuan Dynasty. This paper aims to study the style and artistic accomplishment of Wen Zhengming's calligraphic inscriptions for paintings. As a leader of Wu school,Wen Zhengming was another calligrapher who was adept at Zhuan(seal script of Chinese calligraphy),Li(clerical script of Chinese calligraphy),Kai(regular script of Chinese calligraphy),Xing(running script of Chinese calligraphy)After Zhao Mengfu in Yuan dynasty. He had a moderate and scholarly disposition and mostly made friends with respectable calligraphers and painters at that time.He boldly brought color into his literati paintings with slender strokes, which broke the old aesthetic trend that emphasis on ink rather than the color of pictures. This perfect fusion of calligraphic inscriptions and landscape scenery in the paintings deserve every effort to study.Wen Zhengming lay calligraphic inscriptions on his typically scholastic or eremitic landscape paintings, along with his profound knowledge in literature, poetry, calligraphy and painting. The smooth blending of calligraphic inscriptions and landscape paintings reflecting an elegant and refined style as well as an aura of literati and romance of Wen Zhengming's works, which took the literati painting of the Ming Dynasty to a new height and will be remembered as an artistic monument for generations.
