A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of The Arabian Nightmare(Excerpt)from The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

This is a translation report of The Arabian Nightmare,which is a work of fantasyliterature written by a British novelist and Arab writer Robert Graham Irwin.The plot twists and turns as an English pilgrim Balian of Norwich comes to medieval Cairo on a spy mission and gets caught up in strange intrigues.This report takes the English-Chinese translation of The Arabian Nightmare as an example,and intends to analyze the difficulties encountered in the process of translation under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,in the hope of providing some references for the translation of fantasy literature.The focus of this report is how to use Functional Equivalence Theory to guide the translation of fantasy literature.The author of this report will discuss the guiding role of Functional Equivalence Theory in the translation of cultural elements from three aspects: the translation of social culture,the translation of religious culture,and the translation of material culture.This report is composed of four parts.The first part is task description,which mainly introduces the content of the original text and the translation task.The second part is the task process,which can be discussed from three aspects: pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation matters.The third part is case study,which is the core of this report.First,it briefly describes Functional Equivalence Theory,and then discusses the application of Functional Equivalence Theory in the English-Chinese translation of fantasy literature.The fourth part summarizes the experience and lessons learned in the process of translation as well as the shortcomings in translation.It is necessary for the translator to thoroughly understand Functional Equivalence Theory,give full play to its theoretical guiding role,and reasonably combine the theory with the actual text,so that the translation can reproduce the flavor of the original text and become a popular work.
