Cosmopolitanism and nationalism have been debating endlessly on the issue of distributive justice.Cosmopolitanism advocates the individual as the moral unit of equal concern, while nationalism advocates the nation as the basic unit of distribution. Is there any possibility to resolve the disputes? Theorists have made various attempts to reconcile the two views, among whom Kok-Chor Tan is one of the representatives.Based on the basic standpoint of cosmopolitanism,Kok-Chor Tan tried to accommodate the basic demands of nationalism to achieve their compatibility. However,it is still questionable whether Kok-Chor Tan can really meet the demands of nationalism by setting limits on nationalism through cosmopolitanism. In this paper,I will firstly clarify the concepts of cosmopolitanism and nationalism, and then analyse the logical possibility of compatibility between cosmopolitanism and nationalism, thus leading to Kok-Chor Tan's compatibility theory.Notably,I will next mainly analyse Kok-Chor Tan's compatibility argument, and criticize it from the perspective of nationalism, and discuss whether his compatibility theory is successful or not. Finally, based on analysis of Kok-Chor Tan's compatibility theory,I will propose other possible compatibility schemes instead.
