On Yuanren Chao's Thoughts And Practice About Grammar Teaching In Chinese-as-Foreign-Language-Teaching

Yuanren Chao is a pioneer and founder of Chinese as a foreign language teaching.His contribution is outstanding and his influence is far-reaching.His teaching thoughts still have important guiding significance for the current international Chinese teaching.This paper mainly analyzes the related Chinese textbooks and grammar works edited by Yuanren Chao,according to the historical background of Yuanren Chao's linguistic theory and language acquisition theory,summarizes Yuanren Chao's grammar teaching thoughts of teaching Chinese as a foreign language,which mainly includes the following nine points:(1)Emphasis on grammar of Spoken Chinese;(2)Emphasis on the influence of phonetics and rhythm on grammar;(3)Emphasis on the teaching of different modal particles and various mood components;(4)Emphasis on syntactic structure prior to centralized system teaching;(5)Emphasis on repeated practice drills;(6)Emphasis on recast feedback on students' grammatical errors;(7)Emphasis on including cultural elements during grammar and pragmatic analysis;(8)Emphasis on comparative analysis of English and Chinese grammar;(9)Emphasis on using English as a medium for Chinese grammar teaching;Yuanren Chao's Chinese textbook Mandarin Primer is his practice under the guidance of his grammar teaching thoughts,which systematically reflects his Chinese grammar teaching thought as a foreign language.Many Chinese textbooks in the United States,such as A Syllabus for Mandarin Primer written by Rulan Chao,Basic Spoken Chinese written by Kubler,Cornelius C,Learning Chinese written by Wheatley,J.K,etc.,are all influenced by Yuanren Chao's grammar teaching ideas.
