Logical connectives play a significant role in the structure of English, which is the target language in this case,in Chinese to English interpretation. In order to use logical connectives properly and efficiently, interpreters are required to choose connectives correctly and put it clearly in notes based on their solid understanding of Chinese as the source language. However,Chinese and English vary hugely in language structures and forms.English is with heavy hypotaxis while Chinese is with parataxis.Due to the great pressure in real consecutive interpreting and the difference of the two languages, interpreters often use connectives improperly. Therefore, this paper studies the case of the mock conference on industrial polices to analyze the reasons of the improper use(i.e.redundancy,misuse and deficiency)of logical connectives in Chinese to English consecutive interpreting.By analyzing the problem from three key stages in the process: listening and analysis,note-taking and production, this paper figures out the main causes of improper usage are: lack of understanding or misunderstanding of connectives in the source language, lack of symbols or misreading of symbols in note-taking,and unconscious repetition or inefficient command of connectives in production. In order to solve the problem, this paper also proposes strategies to improve the performance of interpreters, including training of Chinese to Chinese retelling or oral paraphrasing, more distinctive symbols for each connective as well as more effort allocated in monitoring the production. In this paper, the author hopes to provide reference and reflection for interpreters who faced with the same problem.
